About Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas, founder of Muscle Matters. justin-portrait.jpg

I have been a massage therapist for many years now and have built Muscle Matters into a successful thriving mobile massage business with several massage therapists working.
In my previous career I spent 16 years in the opal industry, heading out to the opal mining fields of Lightning Ridge in search of the very rare and expensive black opal. I was also an opal cutter/polisher and wholesaler for some of the biggest opal exporters in the country.

Living in the northern beaches of Sydney, with successful wholesale business passed on to me from my father, I had very strong feelings that there were more challenges in life out there waiting for me.

I came to a crossroads. Do I keep on going on doing what I’ve always done or should I follow my heart and break out and try something I really wanted to do. I had always enjoyed interacting with people on a meaningful level and then my mind was made up - I really want to be a massage therapist. I enrolled that month and got my diploma in remedial massage.

Making such a dramatic life change wasn’t easy but within months we had our house in Sydney, sold and moved with my wife and son to the Gold Coast in sunny Queensland.

We purchased a massage therapy business called Zenigma and shortly after changed the name. And that’s where Muscle Matters was born. We now run a thriving business without many of the stresses we had in our lives in Sydney.

My mission is to make each client a priority and ensure their needs are being met so that they feel 110% better after their massage. Along with the continual growth and learning I receive from advanced schooling and clients, I am enjoying the challenges of building a business and becoming a better therapist every day.

I now feel great peace in my life and am grateful each day that I followed my heart and took the plunge to practice being the best Massage Therapist I can be.

Sometimes change is just what’s needed, life is too short - make the most of the now!

Back Massage

When it comes to massage, back massage is the part of the boa_massage.jpgdy that most people like you to start massaging on. It’s a natural protection mechanism with a rib cage that shelters the person from being massaged in areas that are more vulnerable, like the stomach and quads. Most people who go to see a massage therapist will feel a bit protective at first. The trust has to be earned by the therapist before the patient can totally be accepting to the massage therapist’s body work. The back is the best place to start a massage and help the patient become more relaxed and unwound.

The client will pretty much put a new massage therapist on trial by asking them to start doing a back massage first where they can’t do any damage.

When a massage therapist starts first on another area of the body besides the back, the chances of the massage therapist keeping the client has been diminished by not giving the client a chance to get used to and trust the massage therapist first.

Once the patient has received their back massage, and have decided that they like the massage therapist, they will allow them to go further without being as tense as they would be, by starting somewhere else on the body, like the front.

A massage therapist should not start a massage in the same way or pattern every time Because the patient can get bored of repetition, but when it comes to a new patient, it is most important.

If the patient has been to see the same massage therapist on a regular basis then therapist can go straight in to the problem areas and tackle the tension from different angles. When the massage therapist has taken all of these attributes into consideration, they should have sufficiently been accepted and the patient will want to see them again. ocean2-copy.jpg

massage therapy oils

Sweet almond oil

Oil is an important part of massage for the ease of gliding over areas of the skin that need attention. Today we can come across many types of massage oil that help in healing various ailments. These many different types of oils contain ingredients for specific or all skin types to purify and nourish the skin.

One of the most popular (carrier) massage oil is Sweet Almond Oil. A form of almond oil, sweet almond oil is used mostly for external therapeutic purposes. It is light, sweet and a slightly nutty oil.The fine texture of the oil makes it easily penetrable and nourishes the skin. It is an excellent softening and soothing moisturizer for all skin types. It conditions the skin by helping it to adjust the loss and absorption of moisture hereby resulting in clear, clean complexion.

Grape seed oil

Grape seed extract has been used extensively throughout the world, and it is known to be a rich source of flavonoids, those phytochemicals whose antioxidant properties may exceed those of the more well known vitamin A and vitamin E. Antioxidants are thought to play a role in the prevention of many diseases, due to their ability to reduce the damage done by free radicals in the body. This effect on blood flow makes supplementation with grape seed extract a good idea for those who are likely to benefit from increased blood flow. This includes those with leg cramps, diabetes, varicose veins and numbness of the legs and arms. The increased blood flow may even help to treat erectile dysfunction. In addition, eye diseases common to the elderly, like cataracts and macular degeneration, may be prevented by grape seed extract. Grape seed extract is also believed to help combat less serious eye problems such as eye strain. For massage grape seed extract is often rubbed directly on the skin and doing so may help people maintain their elasticity of the skin. Many skin creams manufactured in the world add grape seed extract for just that purpose. Some studies have shown as well that grape seed extract may help to minimize the damage done by fibromyalgia. This disorder, characterized by its chronic muscle pain and stiffness and does not respond to many traditional treatments, but there is evidence to suggest that grape seed oil may be an effective treatment for some sufferers.Being anti inflammatory in nature, it eases irritation or itching that occurs when one suffers from eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and sunburn. Also sweet almond oil can even palliate muscular aches and pains.

Find a Massage Therapist

What makes a massage truly relaxing? Before you try answering that, let me tell you that it’s hardly the oil or the towel. You could be lying upon the softest of towels, or could have the most expensive body oil rubbed all over your body. But these will hardly ever ensure a good massage.

So, what is it that makes a massage really great? Simple, it’s the person giving you the massage. A good massage is never an accident. Rather, it’s the result of a disciplined study of human physiology and a thorough understanding of the neuro-muscular and skeletal system of the human body.

This is the reason why one of the primary requisites of a therapeutic and truly beneficial massage is a competent and able massage therapist. After all, you wouldn’t want a wrong pair of hands to rub you the wrong way, would you? One is, therefore, well advised to receive the massage from a professional massage therapist. This is the only way to ensure maximum benefits and the best healing effect. After all, a massage should make one feel better, instead of generating a fresh ache all over again or aggravating an existing condition.

So the million-dollar question now is where does one find a massage therapist who will fit the bill perfectly. In all frankness, there is no dearth of massage therapists today. For all you know, your local drug store could tell you about a couple of therapists right away. The local Yellow Pages are a good place to start searching for a massage therapist. Fitness journals, health magazines and newspaper classifieds often carry the names and contact details of massage therapists of all kinds. And of course, there is the Internet. Thanks to various business directories, websites and the inevitable search engines, all it takes now is just a few clicks of your mouse to locate a massage therapist operating in your locality and fix up an appointment.

The easy availability of massage therapists in today’s world comes with a word of caution. Choose your therapist cautiously. Let’s see why. Massage has a therapeutic effect and in order to ensure that the best results are obtained, one must choose a professional masseur or therapist. It is a common misconception to think that almost anybody with a pair of good, strong arms can give you a massage. Massaging, it should be remembered, is hardly the application of force alone. It is more the therapeutic stimulation of vital body processes such as circulation and muscular mobility by specific strokes on the human body.

When you find a massage therapist for yourself, you ought to ensure that he understands this well. A good massage requires an understanding of the human skeletal system, knowledge of the nerves and muscles in the body and of course, skill in using a variety of strokes and techniques. Always insist on receiving a scientific and proper massage. Reap the benefits of a good rubdown and feel better. Feel relaxed, rejuvenated and reenergized.

Massage Therapist Online

Massage Therapist Online

Looking for a massage therapist online is not a very tough proposition these days. All one needs to do is visit one of the popular search engines on the Internet and search for one. Just key in “massage therapist online” in the search field and hit the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard. You’ll be returned with plenty more than you can really chew – hundreds upon thousands of matches for you to choose from! Indeed, finding a massage therapist online has never been easier than now!

However, the easy availability of a massage therapist online is not without a shade of danger. The Internet is a huge marketplace and there is an alarming abundance of faceless or unscrupulous businesses. It is easy to get duped or simply end up receiving a bad service. The point that I am trying to make here is that one can never be too careful in choosing a massage therapist online. Take every measure as you see fit to ascertain, and be fully satisfied with, the credentials and abilities of the massage therapist of your choice. Talk to him if you can, exchange emails, or if he has a brick and mortar address where he may be found, try paying a visit. Make sure that you have chosen a qualified massage therapist, and chosen well. These small measures will ensure that you are not getting taken on a ride by a teenager working from his bedroom and posing as a massage therapist, whose only interest is in making some fast bucks off you and then making himself scarce.

Finding a good and competent massage therapist online is often wining half the battle. Well, in fact, it is all that one really needs to concentrate upon. What makes a massage therapy really beneficial, enjoyable and relaxing? The effectiveness of a massage therapy hardly ever depends of the softness of the towels that you lie on, or the price of the body oil that you have rubbed all over yourself. Rather, it depends on who is giving you the massage.

It is important to remember that a good massage is never an accident, but the result of a disciplined study of human physiology and a thorough understanding of the knots and tension points in the human body, how these tension points develop and a good grounding in the theory of what actually happens as each part is massaged. Of course, one also needs to have knowledge of different massaging techniques.

Massage has a very peculiar duality of nature. It can be both a very simple and an incredibly complicated art. Almost anybody can give you a rubdown. But massage therapy is a completely different proposition. Professional massage therapists use not just hands, but wrists, knuckles, elbows and forearms in order to apply the correct pressures from the correct angles to their clients. They are able to diagnose and treat quite severe injuries such as muscle spasms and tears, as well as ease pain in burn victims and arthritis sufferers.

Massage Therapists

Massage therapy is used to treat painful ailments, decompress tires and overworked muscles, reduce stress, rehabilitate sports injuries and promote general health.

Massage therapists can specialize in over 80 different types of massage, known as modalities. Deep tissue, Swedish, Reflexology, Sports, Acupressure and neuromuscular are just some of the approaches. Most massage therapists specialize in several types of modalities.

Massage sessions can range between 15 minutes to 2 hours and depends on the client’s physical condition and their needs. Therefore massage therapists may use an approach for clients with injuries that would not be used for clients seeking relaxation. Approaches suitable for prenatal massage and infant massage can not be applied on any other type of client.

Massage therapists work by appointment and conduct an informal interview with the client to find out their medical history and desired results from the massage. Based on the persons goals, ailments, medical history, and stress / pain relates problems, the massage therapist will decide whether a massage would be harmful, and if not, will move forward accordingly. During the session, therapists may alter their approach or concentrate on areas of particular discomfort if necessary.

Most modalities of massage use accessories such as massage oils, lotions or cream to massage and rub the client’s muscles. Many massage therapists supply their own tables, chairs, sheets, pillows and lotions and creams. Most of the modalities of massage necessitate the client to be covered in a towel or sheet and be either undressed or wear loose fitting clothing. The massage therapist will only expose the part of the body being massaged and there are some types of massage that can be performed without oils or lotions and are done with the client fully clothed.

Massage therapists need to develop a rapport and relationship if they want repeat customers. People who seek therapists tend to make regular visits and therefore developing a loyal clientele is important.

Massage therapists work in a variety of setting. Some are private and some are public and locations include private offices, fitness centers, sports medicine facilities, airports, shopping malls etc. Many massage therapists will also travel to clients homes. It is not uncommon for a massage therapist to divide their time between a number of these options.

Most massage therapists provide massages in dimly lit settings and the usage of candles or incense is not uncommon.  Calm and soothing music is often played.  The surrounding is thus created to put the client at ease, something that may not be possible if visiting the client’s office.  Therefore the working conditions depend largely on the massage therapist’s location and what the client wants.

As massage therapy is physically demanding massage therapists can succumb to injury if the proper technique is not used.  Repetitive motion problems and fatigue are the most common problems.  This risk can be reduced by the application of proper technique, sufficient rest and breaks between sessions and, in many cases, with massage therapists receiving massages themselves!
